Instead of focusing on trying to make more money, put your time and energy into CREATING and DELIVERING real value. Find a way to give people what they want and/or need.

Take note that the keywords here are CREATE and DELIVER.

Creating value means expressing your unique talents and skills in a way that can potentially benefit others.

Delivering value means ensuring that other people are actually receiving and benefiting from the value you’ve created.

If you don’t do both in some fashion, then it’s going to be hard for you to generate sustainable income, especially during a recession. I’ll explain why.

If you only create value but don’t deliver it, then your value isn’t being received by anyone. So how can you receive value (such as money) in return?

I see this problem a lot with creative types such as would-be artists, musicians, and writers. They may spend lots of time honing their craft, but if they don’t actually get that value into the hands of sufficient numbers of people, they struggle financially, and this hurts them creatively too. A goodly number of these people are currently seeing their homes in foreclosure now.

The sad thing is that some of these people work very hard. But they spend too much time creating and not nearly enough time delivering. They watch people they consider hacks pull ahead of them. The hacks may not be as good on the creative side, but at least they’re getting their value into people’s hands, and on some level people are appreciating their work.

I went down that road myself. In the late 90s, I went bankrupt, even though I was working very long hours and creating a lot of potential value in the form of a computer game my company was developing. My problem was that I didn’t do a good job of getting that value delivered. I relied on publishers to do that, and for various reasons the game was never released. That resulted in years of wasted effort, aside from the valuable learning experience that is. So I know where this road leads because I traveled it.

On the other hand, if you only deliver value but don’t create it, then you’re delivering someone else’s value. This isn’t a terrible approach in the short run, but it’s a short-sighted long-term strategy if this is all you do. There’s nothing particularly special about delivering other people’s value. Anyone can do it. Anyone can sign up for affiliate programs or join an MLM program or become a reseller. If this is your primary means of generating income, your long-term outlook is weak. The better this works for you, the more it will draw competitors into your field. Eventually everyone will be working harder and harder for scraps. This happens all the time. This strategy can be especially weak during a recession, as more people turn to less expensive sources for the same value you deliver, squeezing your profit margins thinner and thinner.

Bloggers fall into this trap when they rehash other people’s content and don’t really have anything unique or compelling to say. A year later their niche is flooded with competitors doing the same thing. And hardly anyone is earning decent income from it.

The most viable long-term strategy is to create AND deliver value. You can mix and match other strategies with it, but this should be your primary method of income generation. If you get good at creating and delivering value, you can basically write your own ticket and enjoy lots of abundance.

Here is the truth about search engine optimization. It’s not as easy to get page ranked as anyone is trying to tell you online. I will try to put all the links together that will assist you in getting your website noticed but it might take some time seeing as that I’m also still searching for more links. I have an online dating website that I’m testing all this stuff on. You can view it at http://www.globidate.com/.

Firstly we’ll need to find keywords that are popular. Search them in Google or yahoo

Second we need to list with as many search engines and web directories as possible. Many free URL submitters are available. Search the words “free URL submission” and choose a few or all of them.

Third we need to get bookmarks to your site. Go to http://www.deliciuous.com/. Create an account, its free and create a bookmark to your website’s URL. Let your friends also do this for you. The more the better.

Fourth we need to get your website mentioned in blogs to give more search results in search engines. Go to http://www.digg.com/, http://www.blogger.com/, etc. and make free accounts and write something about your site and also mention the URL in your blog. Have your friends do the same for you. The more times your site is mentioned by different people, the more results it will get.

Fifth we need to advertise the URL in as many free classified ads websites we can find. Also try http://www.gumtree.com/. They let you advertise for free on their site. When I say as many as you can I don’t mean one or two, I mean hundreds to thousands. This will take time but soon you will notice that your site’s rank will start to increase. This is called “Building back links”. You get links back to your site from the ad site. If you know people that have websites, ask them if they are willing to put a link to your site on theirs and do the same for them (link exchange).

All the above mentioned methods are free of charge. Rankings you need to care about are Google’s page rank and Alexa traffic rank. I will compile a list of tools to post here in my next post.

According to Google, page rank is an algorithm used by them to measure the importance of a web page. With millions of sites on the internet, Google has to have some way to rank them all. Page rank for a site is between 0 and 10 with 0 being the lowest, 10 the highest.

The page rank of your site is determined by the number of quality backlinks coming into your site. Backlinks are incoming links to a website. The more backlinks, the higher the page ranking.

Google Page Rank is a complex algorithm designed not to be easily manipulated by web masters or Search Engine Optimization experts. So for simple folk like me, I can only attempt to share my limited understand Google Page Ranking here. Content of a blog or website is very important. Too many beginners, in their initial enthusiasm, have committed the cardinal sin of copying articles from other people and post them as if their own. Here are the tips I learn.

For any topic or subject, I would attempt to delve in further by doing some research from the internet. After you have gather all the facts and information pertaining to your topic, try not to regurgitate thinking that you should cover all the bases. Instead, offer your opinion and understanding of the topic and writing in you own style.

Writing It With Your Own Style

Here is where I would like to digress a little. My friend James has a way with his words. Take a look at his blog and read this recent post, and you will understand what I mean. His words are so descriptive that he can turn a simple event into something dramatic, hilarious, heartening and set you thinking. Sometime I wish I have his writing style when people comment that my blog is dull and too factual. On the other hand there are others who commented that I have a great site with excellent info. My experience tells me that the more you write, the more fluent you will be in expressing yourself, particularly if it is your opinion of a subject matter that you expound on in your post. Write in in your own style. Teach and not preach, tell rather than sell, your readers will appreciate your effort. Spell check your contents with language tools provided in some software. Be careful with spelling errors.

Ensure Quality Content Always

Doing the above two things will actually ensure you have Quality Contents, and so ensure that your google page rank will eventually go up.

It is always important to link up with your friends and social circle. Though these people may not be too prominent today, one day in future they probably will be a top rank web master. Go to other people sites and drop some comments, of course these have to be genuine comments. If possible look for sites or blogs with high PR.

Write articles and submit to article directories for article distribution. They have huge volume of readers that will probably stumble upon your sites and link to you if they think that you have great contents. Again, it is contents, contents, quality contents….

Build Page Rank Or Not!

Building page rank or not is a matter of opionion for different people. For those of us who want to depend on paid advertisements and posts a higher PR will almost guarantee that we can get good income from paid advertisements or paid posts. It will be easier to get high paying posts than those of a lower PR.

I am of the opinion that we need to build a higher PR while giving our reader great and excellent content. So I will aspire to have a PR5 while building a great blog for my readers. I will affirm with the rest here to say no to page rank with this qualification: Don’t just depend on backlinking, build great contents and excellent info! If possible get backlink from web sites with excellent contents as well.

Now this really excited me. This Day Every One Is Talking About Linking!

It seems that the number of blogs or websites that I visited frequently and lately have been talking about PageRanking. Most of them are actually badly hit by the revised google ranking system (what the hack it is, I do not fully understand anyway). I begin to notice that mine is PageRank O website. So a few questions sent to some friends receive these responds: “It is all about getting links from other people, the more links you have from other people, the more often people come to your site through soome one’s link to your web site, the better your PR should be, starting with a 0 to 9. So far, I only notice all this PR thing when I stumble upon PR7 site that has a link to my article! I beg your pardon that I have to mention again as I am basking in some glory still…

In any case, I stumble onto another web site proclaiming to be PR3. It looks like I should associate my site with them. Taking a closer look, this site is actually an advertising website that provide the ultimate advertising guide to London Advertising industries. It has all kind of categories related to advertising industries like Graphic & Related Services, Signage Promotions Services, and the all important categories of Audio And Video Services. I mean can you imagine those days of advertising only in black and white, TV programs when actors/actresses have to swing their hands around and making cute or hilarious actions just to portray something? The inclusion of Audio And Video Services is an automatic and imperative choice.

There are more than a thousand links categorised into at least 68 categories in this website, making it a resourceful site for all to bookmark it. This day when linking back will help PR, maybe I should get them to provide me with a back link. Any intelligent way to cajole them to do so?
